Where can I find a SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for Tychem® 2000 SFR garments? Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are written in accordance with applicable federal regulations, 29 CFR 1910.1200, to communicate health and safety data on usage and handling of hazardous chemicals. Under this regulation, DuPont™ Tyvek®, ProShield®, and Tychem® materials and garments are defined as articles, not chemicals, and the SDS and labeling requirements in that standard do not apply. Permeation The concentration of my hazard is LOWER than what is listed in the "Search Hazards" box. What should I do? If the temperature of your hazard is LOWER than the hazard listed in the hazard search box, go ahead and select the higher temperature hazard as long as the physical phase (solid, liquid or gas/vapor) is the same. Because chemical hazards become more aggressive with increasing temperatures, selecting a higher temperature chemical hazard will lead to a more conservative result.
Permeation The concentration of my hazard is HIGHER than what is listed in the "Search Hazards" box. What should I do? If the concentration of your hazard is HIGHER than the hazard concentration listed in the hazard search box, you can NOT use the data for the lower concentration hazard. This data will not give you an accurate assessment of suitable garments. Please Contact Us for assistance. How should Tychem® 2000 SFR garments be stored? Store Tychem® 2000 SFR garments in a cool, dark, dry location free of dirt and insects. Sunlight, ozone, high temperatures (>120® F ; 49® C), vehicle exhaust fumes, compression under heavy weights and sharp edges or projections are some conditions known to degrade the materials in these garments. Is it possible to wash and re-use Tychem® 2000 SFR garments? Tychem® 2000 SFR garments should not be cleaned or laundered; dispose of them after use. Can Tychem® 2000 SFR garments be worn in cleanroom applications? Tychem® 2000 SFR garments have not been designed for controlled environment applications. DuPont offers a full line of garments that have been specially manufactured, processed and packaged for use in controlled environment applications. Please see our complete line of controlled environment products at www.safespeccleanroom.dupont.com. Will TYCHEM® 2000 SFR fabric burn? When exposed to a flame, the TYCHEM® 2000 SFR fabric will shrink away. In the event that a flash fire occurs, TYCHEM® 2000 SFR garments will not contribute to additional burn injury if appropriate primary flame-resistant personal protective equipment is worn beneath. When the flame source is removed, the TYCHEM® 2000 SFR fabric will self-extinguish with no or short after-flame. However, garments made of TYCHEM® 2000 SFR must not be used alone in areas where protection from fire or electric arc is required. They are designed to be worn over primary FR garments and ensembles. What are the donning and doffing instructions for Tychem® 2000 SFR coveralls? Please refer to the Section on Donning and Doffing Non-Encapsulating Garments in the Tychem® User Manual - Non-Encapsulated. What is the ambient working temperature range for Tychem® 2000 SFR garments? Tychem® garments can be worn in ambient temperatures of -13°F (-25°C) to 165°F (74°C).
In colder environments, Tychem® garments can become stiff. If cold enough, the fabric may even become brittle. Please be aware that the heat stress of the wearer becomes a greater concern in higher ambient temperatures. At higher temperatures, chemical hazards can become more aggressive. Breakthrough times and permeation rates may change at higher temperatures. The published permeation data per ASTM F739 is performed at ambient temperatures (approximately 72-81° F ; 22-27° C) unless otherwise stated.
Caution: Tychem® fabrics offer little or no thermal insulation to protect the wearer's skin from prolonged exposure to hot or cold. Can Tychem® 2000 SFR garments be used as primary flame resistant (FR) garments? No. Primary flame resistant (FR) garments, such as those made with DuPont™ Nomex® IIIA fabric, can be worn alone to provide the necessary level of protection from a flame/thermal threat. Garments made of Tychem® 2000 SFR fabric are not substitutes for primary flame resistant protective garments. DuPont™ Tychem® 2000 SFR garments provide only secondary flame-resistant protection and are engineered to be worn over your primary flame resistant / thermal protective garments to provide barrier protection from inorganic acids and bases, industrial cleaning chemicals, and particles while not contributing to burn injury in the event of a flash fire. They must always be worn over an appropriate primary flame-resistant garment in an environment that needs flame protection, along with other personal protective equipment that protects your face, hands, and feet. I'm not in an environment that needs FR clothing. Can I still wear Tychem® 2000 SFR? Yes, if Tychem® 2000 SFR is suitable for use for the specified chemical hazard, it can be worn. Tychem® 2000 SFR coveralls provide an effective barrier against a range of inorganic acids and bases as well as industrial cleaning chemicals and particles larger than 0.3 micron. What is the difference between primary and secondary flame resistant (FR) garments? Primary flame-resistant garments are designed to provide stand-alone protection from flame and arc exposures. Common examples are garments made with DuPont™ Nomex® Essential (Nomex® IIIA). Primary flame-resistant garments selected based on the hazard analysis can provide protection from burn injury in the event of an industrial fire or electric arc exposure even when worn alone.
Secondary flame-resistant garments are made with fabrics that are designed to self-extinguish with no or short after-flame once the flame/heat source is removed. Secondary flame-resistant garments are not expected to contribute to additional burn injury if exposure to heat and flame occurs when worn over an appropriate primary flame-resistant garment. Secondary flame-resistant garments like ProShield® 6 SFR, Tyvek® 400 SFR, Tychem® 2000 SFR, and Tychem® 6000 SFR are not expected to provide the wearer any protection from burn injury in the event of a flash fire when worn stand-alone without primary flame-resistant garments underneath. In what ways can I dispose of Tychem® 2000 SFR garments? If not contaminated, Tychem® 2000 SFR garments may be landfilled or incinerated in accordance with local regulations. Uncontaminated chemical protective garments may be incinerated in a facility that is capable of handling mixtures containing plastics. Likewise, an uncontaminated chemical protective garment may be buried in a facility that accepts plastic materials. Tychem® 2000 SFR garments may contain several different materials; they are not suitable for recycling.
Contaminated garments that cannot be handled safely without protective equipment must be disposed of with other hazardous wastes, either through incineration or landfill per local regulations.
Before discarding, cut off a sleeve or a leg so the garments cannot be worn again as protective clothing. Do TYCHEM® 2000 SFR products contain latex? As of January 2023, all DuPont Personal Protection products are manufactured under specifications that exclude components containing natural rubber latex. Tyvek® 500, Tyvek® 600 and Tyvek® 800 styles made before January 2023 contain natural rubber latex, which may cause allergic reactions in some sensitized individuals. Anyone who begins to exhibit an allergic response during the use of DuPont products should immediately cease using these products and should report it to DuPont at +1 (888) 439-2988 so that an investigation can be initiated. What is the shelf life of TYCHEM® 2000 SFR garments? Tychem® garments may be used for 5 years from the date of manufacture as long as all of the following conditions are met:
- The garment has been stored properly (view storage conditions)
- The garment has not been damaged, altered or contaminated
- The garment passes a full visual inspection (view garment inspection instructions)
Why isn’t there a claim made re: NFPA 701: Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films for this garment? NFPA 701 is only appropriate for textile materials used in furnishings such as curtains, draperies or window treatments; or for decorative purposes, awnings, tents, tarps and banners, this standard is not appropriate to asses “FR” performance of clothing. Do TYCHEM® 2000 SFR products contain silicone? All DuPont Personal Protection products are manufactured under specifications that do not contain silicone, with some exceptions. Tyvek® friction-coated shoe covers or Tyvek® garments with friction-coated shoe covers might contain silicone. This includes Tyvek® styles TY122, TY121, FC450 and FC454. Additionally, Tychem® 6000 AL styles TF630 and TF640T contain a silicone valve diaphragm. End users who are consuming these styles and who have concerns about silicone contamination should conduct their own testing to ensure they are suitable for their application(s). Are Tychem® 2000 SFR garments anti-static or static dissipative ? The substrate used to make TYCHEM® 2000 SFR garments is treated with a topical antistatic agent to help minimize static build up and reduce nuisance garment cling.
In situations where static dissipation level is a critical performance property, end-users should evaluate the performance of their entire ensemble as worn including outer garments, inner garments, footwear and other PPE. In order for any garment system to be static dissipative, it must be able to drain a charge buildup through proper grounding devices, such as, but not limited to, workstation grounding clips or static-dissipative floors.
Under certain conditions, such as cold and dry weather, it is possible that garments might build and discharge static electricity. Discharges are not normally dangerous except in situations where the generation of an electrical spark could ignite a flammable atmosphere or startle the wearer. When operating around flammable chemicals, take steps to eliminate potential static discharges. In these situations, suggested steps include, but not limited to, water spray, the use of an overcover, raising humidity level of the work area, use of a commercial, anti-static application coating, grounding straps on equipment and personnel, inherently static-dissipating under- and over-garments, and testing of the worker's static dissipation before entry into the classified area.
However, in the case of explosive or flammable atmospheres, even if steps are taken to manage static formation and dissipate static charge, the risk of severe injury remains if an uncontrolled or accidental ignition occurs. Do not knowingly enter an environment in which the concentration of flammable gas is within flammable or explosive limits while wearing a TYCHEM® 2000 SFR garment. If you determine that you are in a known flammable or explosive environment, exit immediately. In what ways can I manage or prevent heat stress? Chemical protective clothing can interfere with the natural regulation of body temperature. This can lead to a rise in core body temperature and heat stress. Implementing a conservative work/rest schedule or using a cooling system may be effective in reducing heat stress. (Note: Do not wear cooling vests in potentially flammable or explosive environments.) .)
Be aware of the symptoms and treatment of heat stress. If you or your co-workers have symptoms of heat stress such as nausea, dizziness, high heart rates, or excessive heat build-up, leave the work area immediately and remove the ensemble as quickly as possible after decontamination and seek professional care.
The maximum length of time the chemical protective clothing can be worn depends on variables such as the air supply, ambient conditions, climate inside the ensemble, physical and psychological conditions of the wearer, work rate and work load. The TLV® pocket guide from the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH, Cincinnati) provides corrected heat stress limits for some garments. Similar information is available on the federal OSHA web site (www.OSHA.gov). The WBGT correction factor for chemical protective garments is at least 10°C or higher for chemical garments made of impervious films (such as Tychem® garments) and covering the entire body (hooded coverall or encapsulating designs). For Tyvek® coveralls, the WBGT correction factor is 2°C with a hood and 1°C without a hood.

Tychem® 2000 SFR provides chemical and secondary flame protection in a lightweight garment. Tychem® 2000 SFR garments are intended to be worn over primary flame resistant garments. In the event that a flash fire occurs, they won't ignite and won't contribute to additional burn injury if appropriate flame-resistant personal protective equipment is worn beneath.
Tychem® 2000 SFR represents a new generation of secondary flame-resistant chemical garment technology. Unlike traditional secondary flame resistant chemical garments that have been available for years, new Tychem® 2000 SFR garments were specially designed to meet dual hazard needs of a protective chemical suit with secondary flame resistance. This unique combination of performance permits Tychem® 2000 SFR garments to be worn over primary flame resistant (FR) garments when chemical splash and flash fire hazards exist. The fabric used in Tychem® 2000 SFR garments is a unique technology. It doesn’t char like traditional secondary flame resistant technologies. Instead, it was designed to shrink away from flame - without burning.
We engineered Tychem® 2000 SFR garments to perform well in flame engulfment scenarios. Extensive ASTM F1930 (instrumented thermal manikin) testing was conducted during the development of Tychem® 2000 SFR garments to aid in garment design and component selection. The final Tychem® 2000 SFR garment continues to demonstrate excellent performance when exposed to a fire engulfment. In fact, when tested side-by-side, Tychem® 2000 SFR garments yield a much lower predicted body burn level and much less afterflame than competing garments, including Lakeland Pyrolon® CRFR. The performance of the actual garment when exposed to a fire engulfment should be the key deciding point for selection of a secondary FR garment. Using ASTM F1930 testing for 4 seconds of flame exposure, when worn over primary FR tested: 6.0 oz/yd² commercial coverall made with Nomex® fabric, Tychem® 2000 SFR shows 9.3% body burn, versus Lakeland Pyrolon® which shows 28.1% body burn.
Tychem® 2000 SFR garments also provide an effective barrier against a range of inorganic acids and bases as well as industrial cleaning chemicals and particles. They're an ideal option for keeping workers safe from chemicals, while not compromising the flame protection of fire-resistance clothing worn beneath them. Applications include: refineries, petrochemical plants, laboratories, hazardous maintenance operations.
