Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation
Exceptional long-term performance.
Low-GWP. Low embodied carbon.
Since its invention in 1941, Styrofoam™ Brand extruded polystyrene (XPS) has built a rich, storied heritage as an innovative, sustainable building product – creating an entire insulation material category. Its unique closed-cell structure and rigid foam board technology enables XPS to meet core thermal, moisture, air and vapor performance requirements.
The history of innovation continued in 2019, when DuPont began the process of reformulating Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation to offer a low global warming potential (GWP) version. The transition was completed at the end of 2023. All sites in North America manufacturing Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation now produce a low-GWP formulation signified by a new grey color.
Low-GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation delivers
a 94% reduction in embodied carbon, meets all HFC
regulations and building codes and continues to offer:
The same long-term value (and R-value)
Durability
Ease of handling
Exceptional thermal and moisture performance
Transparency. Performance. Quality.
We are committed to transparency in our reporting and quality at every level. Our
products have been evaluated by third parties with certifications that meet or exceed
standards for both sustainability and performance.
Published EPD and Embodied Carbon/LCA Optimization Assessment, demonstrating low-GWP Styrofoam™ Brand XPS has achieved a 94% reduction in embodied carbon relative to the previous formulation
20% pre-consumer recycled content on average as certified by UL Environment
GreenCircle certified
All Styrofoam™ Brand products are produced using 100% renewable electricity¹
¹ We have purchased Renewable Energy Credits to offset our electricity usage since 2016
More than meets the eye
EPS foam allows the intrusion of water over time.1 The closed-cell structure Styrofoam™ Brand XPS Insulation is the design choice for buildings that withstand the elements and the test of time.
Moisture
XPS structure absorbs significantly less water than EPS products
R-Value
XPS maintains R-value better than EPS when water is present1
Durability
Absorbed water can cause damage in freeze/thaw conditions
